DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

The Haig Point Community celebrated the rich history of Daufuskie Island on Saturday with historical tours and presentations.

Archaeologist Joe McGill was one of the headliners. He shared stories from his "slave dwelling project" at the recently restored Tabby Ruins in the center of the community.

The all-day event included tours of the Tabby Ruins and national landmark buildings, the Strachan Mansion, built in 1910 and barged to Daufuskie Island from St. Simons Island, Ga., and the Haig Point Lighthouse, built in 1873 and manned continuously through 1924.

The public event brought together more than 200 visitors from off the island.

A portion of the proceeds went to support the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation, which recently won a state award for historic preservation.
