(CNN) - A news crew gained access to what a U.S. source called an "area of interest" in the search for Nigeria's missing schoolgirls.

The rebel group Boko Haram could be hiding out in the region around Lake Chad. The group's militants captured more than 200 girls in April.

Lake Chad's geography would be a massive challenge to authorities. CNN senior international correspondent Arwa Damon described the terrain as desolate, remote and unforgiving."

Nigerian forces in March raided a Boko Haram camp around the lake, capturing weapons, ammunition and explosives. But Damon described the area as "largely lawless waters."

"It's not just the dense vegetation that makes it so challenging when it comes to searching for Boko Haram's camps or even the missing school girls," he said. "It's that islands … are populated by small clusters of homes. Boko Haram, the schools girls could easily be amongst the local population."
