Fatal jet ski accident has lake goers taking more precautions

MCCORMICK COUNTY, SC (WFXG) -

One woman is dead after a jet ski accident on Lake Thurmond Sunday afternoon, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Jefferson Murray was out on the lake Sunday, and says he didn't know what was going on when he saw the commotion.

"I saw a few boats out in one particular spot, and then I saw a lot of people on land looking, so I assumed something went wrong, like a drowning or something," he says.

Capt. Robert McCullough with DNR says alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.

As a parent, jet ski, and boat owner, Murray says he's tried to teach his children key safety tips before going out on the water.

"Life jackets always. I'm not sure what the law is, but you just need to use common sense and be in life jackets at all times," Murray says.

DNR asks people to be extra observant on the water, and this is something Murray strongly agrees with.

"I watch out for the other boater, and try to keep my distance from them, and follow the boating laws. They might be drinking so you need to watch out for them. It's just like on the road. Just watch out for people who are texting in case they swerve in your lane so you can move," says Murray.

There are also boater safety classes available to make sure everyone going out on the water knows the laws, and how to stay safe during the summer months on the lake.

We are still waiting to hear from the McCormick County coroner to confirm the victim's name and whether or not an autopsy will be performed.
