WEAVER, AL (WBRC) -

The Weaver Police Department takes on the cold water challenge to support Abby Usher of Wellborn, who is fighting a personal battle with leukemia.

Weaver officers and dispatchers are donating money to the Abby Usher's Fight Against Leukemia fund as well as the Hydrocephalus Association.

Lt. Charles Plitt, better known as "Pappa Smurf," was picked to take a cold water plunge for the team.

"In true Weaver PD style, we're not going to do just regular water, it's got to be ice water. this is a cold water challenge," he said in the video.

Last week, the Anniston Police Department challenged the Weaver Police Department, the Oxford Police Department, the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, the staff of the Calhoun County Courthouse and the DA's office and Noble Bank personnel to take the challenge.

So what is a Cold Water Challenge? In essence, a person dunks in cold water to raise money for charity.

The challengee must film their cold water dunk, announce which charity they will donate $10-$20 to, name five other people to take the challenge and then post their video to social media. If a challengee chooses not to do the dunk, they must donate $50-$100 to the chosen charity.

You can keep up with how Abby is doing on the Team Abby Facebook page. Other supporters have also shared their cold water challenges to the page.
