MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - A confirmed case of West Nile in Shelby County means health officials will be spraying neighborhoods Tuesday, June 10.

Mosquito spraying crews will be sprayed a mosquito-killing bacteria on Northhaven Drive on Tuesday in the 38127 zip code.

Shelby County Vector Control's Ture Carlson says the spraying is needed, especially after recent rain in the Mid-South. The rain created standing water and a whole lot of new places for mosquitoes to thrive.

"Once the rain ends, we will run out like crazy and try to kill as many as we can," said Carlson.

There are around 48 different types of mosquitoes, and Vector Control is where they come up with different ways to treat for them.

In addition to spraying, the Vector Control program also fights these bloodsucking creatures with what staffers describe as an environmental friendly bacteria that destroys mosquito larvae in water.

Killing mosquitoes is becoming a priority since a confirmed case, not a human case, of West Nile was discovered in the 38107 zip code.

Carlson says his crews were supposed to spray the 38127 area last night but could not because of severe weather. However, he says he will reschedule the spraying as soon as possible.

Zip codes 38111, 38117, 38118, and 38119 will be sprayed as scheduled Wednesday. Zip code 38109 will be sprayed Thursday.
