A Better Mid-South: Gibson Guitar 5K benefits Memphis community

Editorial by Tracey Rogers, Action News 5 general manager:

(WMC) - It's Flag Day on June 14 and old glory will be flying high over Beale and Second streets for the 7 p.m. start of the 18th annual Gibson Guitar 5K.

First to care, First to serve: WMC Action News 5 started this event with Gibson Guitar to benefit a nonprofit agency near the downtown guitar factory called Saint Patrick Community Outreach. This organization operates a number of nutrition programs, including the Green Machine Mobile Food Market. It's a redesigned MATA bus that's become a rolling Farmer's Market.

The Green Machine visits 20 so-called "food deserts" each week, Memphis neighborhoods with no full service supermarkets or easy access to healthy foods.

The University of Memphis Graduate School of Urban Planning identified each of these areas that the Green Machine serves with the hope that healthier diets will lead to better health among some of the most vulnerable in our community.

You can register for the Gibson 5K here: http://gibsonguitar5k.racesonline.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=site.display&page_id=1823. Proceeds help keep the Green Machine rolling and that makes "A Better Mid-South."
