Despite new polling locations, Beaufort County voter turnout still low

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Polls are closing in just a few hours for Tuesday night's South Carolina Primaries.

But this year, Beaufort County is giving people the chance to vote at seven more locations.

Despite the new locations, voter turnout continues to be low in Beaufort County. The Beaufort County Board of Elections and Registration Director said they're seeing about a 10-20 percent voter turnout in all of the precincts they've visited.

The new voting precinct at the Tide Pointe retirement community has averaged a little more than nine percent.

It's not unusual to have a lower voter turnout for the primaries and the county said it's better than having the opposite problem.

"I prefer that the voters come out and vote," said Director Marie Smalls. "One of the reasons why we added some of the precincts is because to alleviate the overflow of voters at the precinct, so our goal is to get the voters out to vote."

Polls close at 7 p.m.
