Military Salute: Third ID 2014 NCO and Soldier of the Year recipients

Third ID Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Gilpin congratulated 2014 Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year  Sgt. Thomas Mease from Bravo Batter, 1-41 Field Artillery Battalion, First Armored Brigade Combat Team, and he also congratulated the 2014 Third ID Soldier of the Year Pfc. Darryl T. Garner, Jr., HHC 26 BSB, Second Armored Brigade Combat Team.

To win the title of NCO of the Year, you have to pass physical tests or marksmanship skills and answering a panel's questions about anything, from American history to uniform questions.

It is something that Sgt. Mease said is an honor.

"I've competes against a lot of great NCOs, and the soldiers and NCOs that competed in this were extremely skilled, extremely intelligent, so it was an honor to be selected as NCO of the Year," said Mease. "It's still a little bit of a shock to me. My advice to soldiers and NCOs coming up in the ranks is that it's not about the competition. It's about learning your skills, learning what it takes to be a leader. If you do that, you learn the Army regulations that support that, which inevitably make you better at these competitions."
