"Yumion" Illustrator Visits Elementary School

A Georgia children's book illustrator is in Savannah to get kids excited about books. Today Pam Alexander spoke to hundreds of students at East Broad Elementary School.

She's promoting National Children's Book Week and her own series of children's books. Alexander has illustrated three books about Yumion the Onion, and she's working on a fourth right now.

The onion character travels all over the state and kids get to follow along in his journey.

Alexander used to teach eighth grade history and that's where she got many of her ideas for the books. "I thought, when I started making these books, I thought I'd have to give up a part of me that I love," she said. "It's working out to where I'm still teaching and I'm able to draw and illustrate, so I've got the best of both worlds."
