Beaufort holds meeting to discuss horse carriage concerns

Posted: Updated:
BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The city of Beaufort is exploring the option of bringing in outside companies to care for the two horse carriage companies in the city.

At a meeting on Tuesday night, the owners of Southern Rose Buggy Tours and Sea Island Carriage Company voiced their opinions to council.

Southern Rose says Sea Island does not put the horses health first, but Sea Island Carriage denies that accusation, saying its horses are part of the family.

Now the city is thinking about bringing in a third party veterinarian and a clean-up crew to help diffuse the rivalry.

"It seems if the city cannot solve the issue, and found who is actually at fault, then, a third party needs to be coming, but again, the costs could be astronomical. There is a lot of money to be made in the carriage business. So, that will be an affect on the company, "said Peter White, Southern Rose Buggy Tours.

There is another meeting Wednesday at 8 a.m., where a committee will review the carriage rules in the city, make some changes, and take them back to council for a vote.
