UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate man is accused of dragging a pony about 100 yards while tied to a pickup truck, requiring the pony be put down, according to deputies.

Union County deputies were called to the Union man's home by animal control after the pony suffered "devastating injuries," according to the incident report.

Deputies said the pony had gotten loose so Jethro Lipsey, 23, tied it to the bumper of his truck and at some point, the horse fell, and was dragged about 100 yards.

Deputies said the pony had broken legs and was scraped, requiring animal control to euthanize the animal at the scene.

Lipsey was arrested and charged with ill treatment of animals.

FOX Carolina reached out to Lipsey and his mother declined to talk on camera but said it was a tragic accident
