BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Have you been thinking about adopting a pet? Then Wednesday was the perfect day to do so because the Greater Birmingham Humane Society offered adoptions for just $11.

The event was part of a nationwide no-kill day when shelters will not euthanize any animal. It's all in an effort to not only find forever homes for animals but bring awareness to pet overpopulation.

The GBHS said owners surrender about 25 pets each day which is one cause of overcrowding. Executive Director Karen Peterlin said another issue is spaying and neutering.

"As long as our state does not have spay and neuter legislation and as long as we don't require licensing of pets, we're going to continue to have overpopulation. And we can't adopt our way out of it," Peterlin said.

In addition to adoptions, the GBHS partners with volunteers who foster animals. This frees up space at the shelter.

The shelter was open until 11 p.m. Wednesday and 89 dogs and cats were adopted!
