Norman Smart denied bond in wife's murder case

Posted: Updated:

A Wilmington Island man who is facing murder charges was denied bond in court on Wednesday.

Norman Smart is accused of murdering his wife, Lauren Brown Smart. Her body was found in their home over the weekend.

This is the second time Smart has appeared in court because his charges were upgraded from aggravated assault to murder after autopsy results were returned.

Smart would not make eye contact with the judge during the bond hearing, instead looking down the whole time.

After he was denied bond, Smart got upset, saying "I didn't do this to my wife." He them sat down and it looked as if he was crying.

Lauren Brown Smart was found in their Wilmington Island home on Saturday. Some of her family members were in attendance at Wednesday's hearing, and they said they are not commenting on the case until after her funeral.

A date has not been set for the funeral, but Smart is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
