Local man petitions city to help feed needy

Posted: Updated:

A local petition to let the public the feed the hungry is picking up speed online.

Savannah laws require hot food served for charity to be cooked in a commercial kitchen, but Savannah resident John Young wants to change that.

Young is in charge of an online petition that would change the laws to allow regular citizens to feed the hungry, so long as the food itself meets health standards.

"[The city] requires things like four sinks in a kitchen," said Young. "That's something that an average American can't afford to have in their kitchen, and I believe that the average American should be able to feed their community."

Reverend Carl Gilliard of Savannah Feed the Hungry said there are still many ways citizens can help feed those in need, like donating non-perishable items like bottled water or canned goods.

The petition can be found here.
