City trying to regulate vacation home rentals

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It's a growing trend in Savannah, and now city leaders are trying to regulate it.

Property owners are renting out homes and apartments for vacationers, and the Metropolitan Planning Commission is trying to work out the rules.

Property owners are generally supportive of the regulations and say they want to make sure rouge property owners, who don't pay taxes on vacation rentals, have to ante up just like those playing by the rules.

"From our experience, we've been doing it for two years, charging the taxes on our rentals, and we're still getting the same occupancy rates that everyone else is, so we know the market can bear it," said Corey Jones of Lucky Savannah Vacation Rentals.

City council is expected to vote on the proposed rules at the end of the summer.
