DOVER, DE (KYW/CNN) – The remains of three of the five American service members killed in a friendly fire attack in southern Afghanistan are back on U.S. soil.

A dignified transfer of remains for the soldiers took a place at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Thursday.

Pentagon officials say a coalition jet called in to ward off a Taliban attack in Zabul province, mistakenly bombed the U.S. Special Forces troops, killing five soldiers.

Their deaths raise the number of Americans who have died since the Afghan war began, to 2,328.
