1100 block of W. 49th St. given all clear after evacuation

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The SCMPD reported a voluntary evacuation for residents in the 1100 block of W. 49th Street.

The SCMPD investigated a potential explosive device found in the area, but it turned out to be a box that military used as practice bombs in aricraft training. It is dated 1952, and authorities said explosives are usually inside of it, but that was not the case. 

Someone in a house in the 1100 block of W. 49th Street found the decades old box and reported it around 4 p.m. 

"They don't know how long it's been there," said WIlkin Cutter who evacuated. "They're waiting on the bomb squad and Army to check it out."

Authorities ordered voluntary evacuations while they were wating for help from the military. 

Metro bomb squad cleared the scene.

    After years of an almost complete moratorium, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council voted 12 to 1 Monday to open a limited 2017 red snapper fishing season in the South Atlantic. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the season will likely begin in mid-to late October.
