Unincorporated Chatham County to see same dry trash rate

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Trash fees for residents in the unincorporated areas of Chatham County will remain the same after the county was looking at a possible increase to pay for the service.

Right now, residents in the unincorporated areas pay about $43 dollars a year for their dry trash service, but the fee doesn't fully fund the actual service it provides, and the county needed to figure out how to continue to pay and provide the service to the residents.

The commission strongly voted down a fee increase, and instead voted for a motion that would supplement the cost with funds from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax Revenues.

"They're already asked for more revenues than their fair share," said District Four County Commissioner Patrick Farrell. "Therefore, I'm philosophically against adding another fee to a particular service when I feel like there is already a taxation injustice to the unincorporated residents, which now number about $87,000."

County Commission Chairman Al Scott said since the SPLOST funds will fluctuate based on the sales tax revenues and if for some reason that source of money runs dry, it could lead the commission to rely on a milage rate increase later on.
