New VA clinic opens in Hinesville

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

A new medical clinic in Hinesville will save local veterans time and money. The expanded services at the VA Outpatient clinic will mean fewer trips required to get healthcare out of town.

"We'd have to travel to Savannah or Charleston for tests and other kinds of treatment," offered local Vietnam Veteran Richard Hunt. Others in the area were assigned to the VA hospital in Dublin.

Plans began four years ago to expand the clinic from a storefront to a stand alone building. In fact, community and project leaders scrapped initial plans for a 10,000 square foot complex because it would not accommodate the demand. The new clinic features 23,000 square feet of space.

"This building triples the space we had in the previous clinic," noted interim director Scott Isaacks. "We have primary care and mental heath. But we also offer radiology, optometry and some specialty services that will save patients from driving to Charleston."

The clinic opening comes on the heels of veterans across the nation voicing their frustrations over delays in appointments at VA hospitals and clinics.

"I think we've needed reforms on a country-wide basis," said Hinesville mayor Jim Thomas, an Army veteran. "But on the local level, I've gotten good response getting treatment here and at the hospital."

The hospital is designed to accommodate approximately 10,000 veterans living in the area.
