Isle of Hope school construction noisy affair

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Construction is already underway on the new Isle of Hope K-8 school, but the crews could be started a lot earlier in the morning if the county gives them an exception to the noise ordinance.

Many residents are upset about this because the area is already noisy, but now the crews want to start working at 4 a.m., which residents say would be a huge disruption.

"Loud booming noises," said resident Melissa Sanso. "You can hear the cranes going, you can hear the trees falling over."

Sanso lives right across from the construction site for the Isle of Hope school and wakes up to the 7 a.m. start of construction.

"A lot of rattling windows," she said. "A lot of waking up at 7 a.m. to booms."

But that 7 a.m. wake up call could get a lot earlier. The contractor is asking the county commission to allow crews to start work as early as 4 a.m. The current noise ordinance only allows crews to work from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The contractor said because of the summer heat, the most successful option for pouring concrete is the earlier, the better. But that doesn't sit well with residents.

"I hate the idea of hearing the noise at four in the morning," said Sanso. "And I'm already closer than most people."

The commission tabled the decision in an effort to allow the residents time to get more information.

"I will be happy and glad to try to explain to the residents what's going to be involved," said Helen Stone. "The contractor was clear in saying that they could do this without the variance, so is it really necessary? So these are some things that really need to be ironed out, but the process was what disturbed me the most."

The issue will be readdressed at the board's next meeting, which will be on June 27. As for Sanso, she said maybe if the other residents had been more involved in the process, they could have spoken up in the first place.
