Mother, son caught in middle of gun battle

After driving home from visiting a relative's home, Glendia Barber and her son Shaquille Jackson found themselves in the middle of a rolling gun battle on Highway 138 in Riverdale, in Fayette County near the intersection of Highway 314.

Barber said she was in the far left lane of the four-lane road when she heard multiple shots. When they looked back, Barber and Jackson saw muzzle flashes coming from both cars.

"They were shooting at each other and I heard a big bang," Barber said.

That bang was a round from a .45-caliber handgun striking Barber's driver's side door just inches from the window.

"Me or him probably would have got shot in the head or chest. One of us would have got shot," Barber said.

After the mother and son returned home both were grateful to be alive.

"I am thankful that she is still here, that I am still here and we are safe," Jackson said. "Hopefully, no one else got hurt."

Barber has this message for the shooters.

"You need to think before you shoot because other people who are innocent bystanders' lives are in danger," Barber said. "We could have lost our lives for something we didn't have nothing to do with. We could have been gone in an instant."

Barber and Jackson described hearing more than a dozen shots.

Deputies collected evidence at the scene. They are asking anyone who has information on the green Toyota Camry and the gold Jaguar to call 770-461-6353.
