WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY (NEWS 12 WESTCHESTER/CNN) – One of the heirs to the Standard Oil fortune died in a small plane crash in New York.
Dr. Richard Rockefeller was killed Friday when his single-engine plane crashed in Westchester County, NY.
County executive Robert Astorino says Rockefeller's aircraft went down just after take-off from an airport near White Plains, NY.
Astorino says the plane missed a house by about 200 feet before crashing in the Hamlet of Purchase.
"The sole occupant and pilot is Dr. Richard Rockefeller.," Astorino said. "He flew in yesterday [Thursday] for the birthday of his father, David Rockefeller, who turned 99 yesterday and he was to fly home to Portland, Maine this morning [Friday]. He has a wife and two grown children."
An airport spokesman described the 65-your-old Rockefeller as an experienced pilot.
The weather at the time of the crash was foggy with just a quarter of a mile of visibility.
Federal investigators are at the crash scene, trying to figure out exactly what happened.
