Local student awarded by President Obama

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A local student is recognized by President Obama for her dedication and commitment to the Savannah community, receiving the President's Volunteer Service Award.

Zametria Huff just graduated from Groves High School, not only walking away with her diploma, but an award from the president to hang along with it on the wall. It is an award for the hundreds of the hours she has dedicated to the community in her lifetime.

"Anybody can nominate you for the award, but it is an honor to receive the award," said Huff.

Huff says her school counselor nominated her for the President's Volunteer Service Award, but says she and her family were shocked when she was actually chosen for the award.

"That's what thrilled me; the President of the United States sent my baby an award," said Huff's grandmother, Vernell White.

Over the last six years, Huff says she has put in more than 600 hours volunteering at church, community centers, and even spending time with senior citizens and children.

"Anybody that calls me, I'm there," said Huff.

She says she has had a passion for helping people since she was little.

"I don't know if it is a calling, but I know it is something I picked up from my mother," said Huff. She was always out there helping people, whether it was singing a song to lifting spirits."

Her mom died suddenly when she was in fifth grade, and that is when she decided to carry on her mother's legacy.

"Watching her, I said I always wanted to be like her," said Huff.

She knows her mom would be proud of her, but says there is nothing more rewarding than helping people, and she encourages everyone in our community to give back.

"If you see somebody that really needs help, just take time out to help," said Huff. "It will make you feel like a whole different person inside."

Huff says she will be attending Savannah Tech in the fall, and hopes to open up a child care center one day, for struggling moms.
