In honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Sunday, June 15th, the Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services encourages Georgians to learn about the warning signs of elder abuse.

By raising awareness fewer older adults and people with disabilities will experience abuse in the state of Georgia.

Dr. James Bulot, Director of the Division of Aging Services said, "Abuse doesn't always result in bruises, it can take many forms that affect victims emotionally, physically, sexually, and financially.

Here is a list of the types of elder abuse:

  • physical abuse
  • mental, emotional, or verbal abuse
  • sexual abuse
  • neglect
  • self neglect
  • financial exploitation
According to the Administration of Aging, 1 in 10 older Americans become a victim of abuse, neglect, or exploitation each year.

23.5 percent of elder abuse cases go unreported every year.

The National Center on Elder Abuse offers community education resources and awareness building tools. You can find out more information by clicking here.

Georgia's statewide Adult Protective Services team accepts reports of suspicious activity by phone, fax or online. To report the abuse of an older person call (866)-552-4464.
