800 citations given out over weekend in Operation Thunder

Operation Thunder is in full force throughout Chatham County.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police have teamed up with the Governor's Office of highway Safety and other law enforcement agencies all over the state to crack down on the number of traffic related deaths.

On Saturday and Sunday, people suspected of driving under the influence were not allowed to refuse a DUI test. On-call judges were available at check points to issue warrants for a blood test, something not everyone thinks is right.

"It is constitutional to get a search warrant and get someone's blood, but that's not what the Supreme Court actually reviewed in the case local law enforcement is relying on to say what they're doing is correct," said Mark Tate of the Tate Law Group. "Instead what that case said was, if someone gets stopped in an ordinary observation by an officer and you're driving erratically, you have to have a warrant before you take a blood sample. Nothing ever condoned the situation that went down here in Chatham County."

More than 800 citations were given out this weekend.

Operation Thunder continues through August.
