Lawmakers back in Columbia for vetoes, other items

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina lawmakers return to the Statehouse this week to consider whether to override vetoes by Gov. Nikki Haley and possibly a number of other items.

Haley vetoed about $18 million in spending in the $7 billion budget that takes effect July 1. Haley rejected a $12,000 increase for lawmakers' expenses in their home districts. She said the General Assembly should ask voters if they approve of such an increase.

It would take a two-thirds vote by the House and the Senate to override the vetoes.

The lawmakers could also consider a measure to expand the College of Charleston into a research university. The bill would also give Clemson University more flexibility on construction projects at the school.

Lawmakers are scheduled to finish their work this week.
