Operation Thunder issues 1,000 citations in two weeks

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

More than 1,000 citations have been written in a little more than two weeks as part of Operation Thunder, a traffic crackdown that spans Chatham County.

More than 400 of the citations were written over Saturday and Sunday alone. It was Operation Thunder's first no-refusal DUI weekend.

If a driver refused to take a breath of blood alcohol test, officers got warrants to draw their blood. Organizers say they requested five blood draw warrants this weekend.

"There were only a few that refused, and that is a decision that rests with the local agency and the local judges," said Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety Harris Blackwood. "A judge has to make that decision."
