Congressman John Barrow, D-GA, is calling for the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Veteran's Administration.
He is pushing for an independent investigation of what he contends is criminal wrongdoing by supervisors doctoring records at the VA, and that is just one of several bi-partisan efforts he's pushing.
"The first thing to do is to make sure that those who have been waiting in line for a service can get that service," Barrow said by phone. "And the bill we voted on last week makes that possible … allows them to break out of the bureaucracy at the VA. If they've been waiting in line for the service more than 14 days, go get it in the community from the doctors that you know and the doctors that you trust. Second, get to the bottom of what happened in the bureaucracy in the first place, get to all the folks involved in the mismanagement on a bureaucratic scale that have allowed these problems to fester for so long. And third, think about how we can reallocate our resources in the future so that this sort of thing just doesn't happen again."
