Customers help watch store after clerk's murder

Posted: Updated:

Some loyal customers of the Minit Mart in Santa Claus have begun staying around the store longer. Duane Bevridge comes each evening after a day's work and supper to stay until closing time.

He and his daughter began stopping there when they moved to Santa Claus a year ago. Clerk Chris Wiggins befriended his daughter and that prompted them to stop at the store at least once a day.

"She would get ice cream, and he gave her candy at Halloween," Bevridge said with a voice choked in emotion.

Robbers came in the store the night of June 8 and shot Wiggins to death. Bevridge began coming to the store each evening almost immediately when the store reopened after Wiggins' funeral.

"It was my daughter's idea. She wanted me to go up there an check on her friends. It's hard to tell her no," he said.

Store clerks can't say thank you enough.

"I mean it makes us feel more comfortable that there's still good people. What happened was terrible," said clerk Brandy Hand.

Investigators continue to look for leads in the case.
