Vols defense deals with lack of experience, size

After years of playing catch-up with the rest of the Southeastern Conference, Tennessee's defense finally is getting up to speed. A variety of position switches and the infusion of a talented recruiting class have given Tennessee a faster defense, addressing what had been a major weakness. The Volunteers need that extra quickness to make up for a lack of experience and size as they head into their Aug. 31 opener against Utah State. The inexperience is most apparent. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The "Diamond DeShields Effect" seems pretty positive so far for Tennessee.

The Lady Vols new hoops star brings her talents to UT from North Carolina and her good friend Te'a Cooper is bringing five stars of her own at the point.

Saturday, though, it was football DeShields was affecting in one way or another.

They probably would never admit it, but it seems a bit suspect that DeShields and Cooper both committed, and now here comes high school friend and now-former Alabama running back Alvin Kamara.

One of last year's top rated backs out of high school, Kamara chose the Crimson Tide, but now he's joining Big Orange.

He'll play at Hutchinson Community College this fall but will be available to the Vols in 2015.

Whether it's real or not, the perceived "DeShields Effect" is proving rather effective for recruiting in Orange and White country.
