SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Purple Heart Veteran, James Caines, and his family, were honored during a luncheon at the Johnny Harris Banquet Facility on Victory Drive on Sunday.

The luncheon is an annual honor, hosted by the local Unit 596 Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. This is the twelfth year they have hosted a Purple Heart Veteran for lunch.

"It is a fun time. It is an exciting time, but mostly it is the time that we say thank you, because every Purple Heart Veteran has shed blood, due to the enemy hurting them. We thank them. It is just a way we like to say thanks," said Rose Cook, past president.

"To me it means a lot. They have done a great job as far as recognizing us. The ladies have done a great job. We all appreciate it," said James Caines, Purple Heart Veteran.

WTOC'S own Sonny Dixon was the guest speaker for the event.
