Teens volunteer to renovate homes in the Lowcountry

Posted: Updated:

More than 300 teenagers from across the country are spending this week renovating more than 50 homes in Jasper and Beaufort County.

The teenagers are part of a ministry known as the Catholic Heart Work Camp and they're teaming up with the United Way of the Lowcountry and its partner agencies.

The projects include yard cleanup, building a wheelchair ramp, painting, replacing old floors and installing a shower.

"It's one thing to do this but to see the youth here and the encouragement from them and how much they're helping the people and how much the people appreciate it, it's really, really wonderful," Dave Horvath, supervisor of the camp said.

"With them coming and helping, it's been a godsend, today's our 58th anniversary, him and I and it's something…it's a miracle! I've never had it done before but there's a first time for everything," homeowner Dorothy Tobiasz said.

The groups will wrap up all of the renovation projects by Thursday.
