Beaufort Co. Council set to vote on school budget

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County Council is set to vote on a number of agenda items Monday night at its bi-monthly meeting.

Among the items include the first reading of the list of capital sales tax projects and more importantly, the third and final reading for the Beaufort County School District's budget.

The goal is to have the school district and council reach a compromise on the issue. School board chairman Bill Evans seemed optimistic that it would happen.

The district asked for $118 million for the 2014-2015 school year, which was $10 million more than what they asked for last year.

Many of the increases come from state mandated costs but the council wanted to see those numbers reworked by almost $4 million less.

Since the second reading, the district has identified four areas where they can cut close to $2 million without affecting classrooms, but they are still hopeful that the council will increase their budget.

"Our only decision we thought was a prudent one, was to wait until the county council took its third and final vote so we knew exactly what we were going to have to cut. I think the process has been very good, I think we have open ears on the council's part so we'll see what the outcome is tonight," Evans said.

Tuesday at 5 p.m., school board members will meet to discuss where some of these cuts will be at the district office.
