Port of Savannah sees record imports, exports in May

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Port of Savannah is handling record cargo volumes.

Georgia Ports Executive Director Curtis Foltz said the ports in Savannah and Brunswick handled 2.36 million tons of imports and exports in May, the most the ports have seen in a single month.

When the fiscal year ends next week, Savannah will exceed a milestone of three million containers.

Foltz said a recovering U.S. economy is fueling much of the growth.

"When we throw these statistics out, it's all about jobs," said Foltz. "These tons, these containers, these automobiles, they don't move on conveyor belts, they move with people."

Foltz said while they can't expect record breaking numbers every month, he said there is a lot going on at the ports, and they plan to keep moving forward.
