COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Columbus police released a video to the media which they say shows a man taking advantage of a senior citizen.

He was waiting for food at the counter of Shark's Fish and Chicken on Wynnton road, when investigators said a woman pulled cash out of an envelope to pay for her meal, but then forgot to put it back in her purse. The white envelope blended into a background white menus, which made it easy to lose track of.

When she left the restaurant without her money, police said the man was faced with a decision and he made the wrong one. He is observed on camera looking back and forth and taking one last moment to think about it before he picks up the envelope and hides it in his bag of food.

Alma Moses, 73, said she stopped into Sharks a few weeks ago, right after making a withdrawal from the bank.

"That money was for paying my bills for the month of June."

According to Moses, there was over $500.00 inside. She kept her utilities from being shut off by making copies of the police report to prove she was the victim of a crime.

"I took them to everyone who I owed and they understood," said Moses.

Police said the man didn't think about the camera directly above the register, and thanks to tips from the public, a detective was able to get in contact with the suspect after people watching the news recognized his face.

The man agreed to turn himself in to authorities by Thursday to avoid the embarrassment of being publicly arrested.   The detective on the case said the man understood that he did something wrong and he admitted to it right away.
