SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) -

Officials in Rowan County say the son of a man who was found dead inside his Salisbury home Tuesday was found dead inside a Charlotte motel room.

Kenny "Pee Wee" Smith, Junior, was found dead in a motel room in Charlotte. Officials said they believe he took his own life.

The news came just hours after deputies obtained a murder warrant on Smith in connection to his father's death.

The incident began when the Rowan County Sheriff's Office responded to a home on the 100 block of Pineview Circle after receiving a call from family members of 68-year-old Kenny Smith, Sr, requesting that a check be made for his welfare.

Those family members told deputies that they had been trying to get reach Smith by telephone, but could not get any answer after repeated calls.

Deputies went to the home around noon and found Smith deceased inside. Investigators then responded to the scene to make necessary reports and collect evidence.

After investigating, deputies determined that Smith had been murdered.

Officials named Smith's son, 44-year-old Kenny Smith, Jr, who also goes by the name "Pee Wee," as a potential suspect in the case and obtained warrants for his arrest for murder and felony robbery.

Deputies say Kenny Smith, Jr, lived at the home with his father, but was missing along with his father's financial card.

Just before 10 p.m., deputies told WBTV that officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department had found Kenny Smith, Jr, deceased in a Charlotte motel room.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Lt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687, SSG Jason Owens at 704-216-8683, or their local law enforcement agency.
