Repairs underway at Snelson Golden Middle School after winds wreck bus ramp

LIBERTY CO., GA (WTOC) -

Repairs are underway at Snelson Golden Middle School in Liberty County after strong winds during Monday night's storms damaged the bus ramp and part of the football field.

Mangled metal poles are all that's left after part of the roof was completely ripped off the bus ramp.

Several people said they saw a small twister develop, but the National Weather Service said there was nothing on the radar to indicate a tornado. They said this damage was likely caused by straight line winds topping out at 50-60 miles per hour.

The bus ramp is located behind the school, but pieces were found next to the parking lot in the front of the school. Luckily no one was injured.

"My neighbor was outside cutting grass, and we had seen the wind and the sky turn grey, but we didn't think it was going to be like a small twister or heavy wind," said Aaron Bennett.

"We walked outside and we heard what sounded like was hail hitting a tin roof," said Chuck Smith. "It was kind of like a metallic sound. We really didn't know what it was until this morning, and we heard they had damage here at the school."

Crews cleared up the debris on Tuesday morning, and school officials said the bus ramp should be fixed by the time school starts in the fall.
