Marine Recruit Dies During Crucible

An investigation is underway after a Marine recruit died early this morning. It happened on Parris Island overnight during the Crucible, a 54-hour field training exercise that tests endurance and involves sleep and food deprivation.

Parris Island officials say they do not know the cause of death at this time, only that the recruit went to sleep and never woke up.

"This recruit failed to respond when training personnel attempted to wake him up after sleeping on the last evening of the Crucible," said Maj. Ken White. "Immediately, they initiated CPR, but they were unable to revive him."

The recruit later died at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. His name is not being released at this time.
