Savannah-Chatham County School Board votes to increase property taxes

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham County School Board voted to increase property taxes without increasing the millage rate.

Since the digest, or the sum of all taxable properties in Chatham County, increased, the school board will net more than $3 million additional dollars, which by law is a tax increase.

"For most tax payers, that means that your property taxes will remain the same for the upcoming school year," said Budget Director Larry Jackson. "The only way you will see a difference in your property taxes is if your appraised value of your house goes up, then you will have additional taxes on your property."

The millage rate for Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is below average compared to surrounding counties.
