Square watermelons becoming popular Japanese export

Posted: Updated:

Kagawa Prefecture, Japan (EVN/NHK/CBS) - Farmers in western Japan have started shipping square-shaped watermelons to locations across the country and overseas.

A farmer produced the product about 30 years ago. The square-shaped watermelons are to be used as display ornaments.

On Wednesday, farmers in Zentsuuji City prepared about 250 cubic watermelons for shipment. Each of them is usually sold at more than $100 at department stores.

Japan agriculture officials said the watermelons are becoming popular overseas. They said they have received 114 orders from Canada so far.

An official of JA Kagawa said he wants to increase the amount of production capacity and expand the supply for overseas.

The shipping will end around mid July.
