Improvements coming to Pooler Parkway, I-95 intersection

POOLER, GA (WTOC) -

There are new developments on a project that will help relieve some major traffic issues at the Interstate 95 and Pooler Parkway intersection.

On Thursday the city council approved the Airport Commission's spending to move forward with the interim improvements.

The area experiences a lot of congestion, and with the new outlet mall on the horizon, they want to start as soon as possible, and on Thursday they were one step closer.

The goal of the project is to widen the roads getting on and off I-95 to take care of some of the backup on Airways Avenue. Originally, this GADOT project wasn't supposed to start until after the new Pooler outlet mall was finished, but the airport, Gulfstream and Ben Carter Enterprises decided that wasn't soon enough and teamed up to get the project started sooner.

On Thursday, city council approved the Airport Commission's funding of nearly $600,000 to the construction company. While there is no start date, R.B. Baker is securing the bonds and working on agreements to move forward on a project the entire city of Pooler is excited for.

"It is exciting because we do want to make it a lot easier for people to get on and off, but we definitely want to make sure everyone is safe," said Pooler Mayor Mike Lamb. "It's already busy as it is. We need it now, but we'll need it even more once the mall gets here and some other shopping."

The airport said there is no construction start day yet, but they'd like to see it started as soon as possible.
