Heavy rain causes sewage spill in Port Wentworth

Posted: Updated:
PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) -

After the heavy rain on Monday a major sewage spill occurred at the City of Port Wentworth's Waste Treatment Facility.

The spill resulted in the discharge of approximately 300,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater off-site into the drainage basin of the Savannah River, approximately 1.2 miles from the river.

The cause of the spill was the result of excess flow to the facility during a flash flood.

The city is undergoing protective actions, including continuing their infiltration and inflow abatement program, to insure the prevention of future non-compliant discharges.

Additionally, the city has commenced with stream monitoring in accordance with Environmental Protection Division requirements.

The state EPD classifies spills greater than 10,000 gallons as major.

Further questions can be directed to City of Port Wentworth, 305 South Coastal Highway, Port Wentworth, GA 31407.
