Kingdomwood Christian Film Festival coming to Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Coming soon to the Lowcountry, a popular Christian film festival is making its way from Atlanta down to Hilton Head Island.

The Kingdomwood Christian Film Festival is an annual four day event that allows indie filmmakers a chance to screen films that center on faith based teachings.

This film festival is a win-win situation for both area churches and the local economy. Founder Audrey Thomas created the festival about seven years ago based on what she saw was missing in the film industry.

The festival has grown to attract Hollywood names who will not only help boost the festival, but also the local economy.

Summer is off to a hat start in Hilton Head.

"Most likely the best summer we have ever had on the island," said Susan Thomas of the HHI-Bluffton Chamber of commerce. "It's just doing great across the board."

And it's about to get hotter during the first weekend of October when the Kingdomwood Christian Film Festival comes to town. Local businesses can't wait to capitalize on it.

"It's a big boost to our local tourism numbers because it fills up those resorts and in turn, other travelers that are coming here to look at other lodging opportunities so that creates compression."

The Sonesta Resort and the Beach House will house the 500+ participants during the four day festival.

Thomas said Hilton Head Island was a natural choice for her when she decided to move it down from Atlanta.

"When you think about filmmakers being creative, then there's no better place to be than the water where they can really focus and network and be creative," said Thomas.

She anticipates this year's festival will be the biggest one yet because of religious films like "God's Not Dead" and "Noah" have captivated Hollywood to come to Kingdomwood.

I think it's fantastic that we can tap into Hollywood and let them know that they aren't the only place where great films can come from," said Thomas. "We can have wholesome, family friendly films at Kingdomwood."

Kevin Sorbo, who starred in the film "God's Not Dead", will be the keynote speaker. Thomas said she hopes to return Hilton Head Island for next year's festival but she's going to take it one step at a time and let God lead her.
