Tybee Island city council holds meeting to discuss waste management issues

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

A meeting was held on Tybee Island on Friday to answer questions about a picture that was taken by Tybee resident Michael Elliot showing a recycling truck that emptied recycling and regular trash into the same truck.

At the meeting the recycling company, Waste Pro, explained why they were dumping recycling bins into the same truck. They said if the recycling has any kind of contamination in it, then they throw the entire bin into the trash rather than risking contaminating the entire truck load of recycling.

"It's in everyone's best interest that we clearly separate recyclables from the garbage so that there is no confusion, and we can recycle as much as possible," said Tybee Council Member Paul Wolf.

Waste-Pro also said they get fined if they put trash into recycling.
