GA safe carry gun laws take effect July 1

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Safe Carry Protection Act goes into effect in Georgia Tuesday, July 1.

The law, signed by Governor Nathan Deal, allows gun owners, with permits, to take their firearms into more places including libraries, unsecured city buildings, bars and potentially churches.

One proponent of the new law said that should make people feel safer.

"They're going to have it regardless of having a permit or not. They'll do this act without having that permit, but with more people having these permits, and being able to carry it more places, I think it's a good thing for them to feel more protected," gun carrier Shane Lee said.

Gun carriers still will not be able to take their guns on private property without the owner's permission.
