HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

An investigation is underway after fire damaged a building on Hilton Head Island.

It happened around 5 p.m. Monday at the former Great American Cleaners at 16 Palmetto Bay Road. Firefighters had the fire out by 6:30 p.m. However, crews remained at the scene Tuesday morning to monitor hot spots.

Officials say the building is destroyed.

Fire marshals said that they do not believe the cause was accidental.

The exact cause is still undetermined at this time, but they are calling it suspicious.

The investigation will now involve the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office was on hand to direct traffic while firefighters put out the fire. Deputies closed Palmetto Bay Road from Sea Pines Circle to Arrow and Target roads. All roads have since reopened.
