College of Charleston goes tobacco-free

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The College of Charleston has gone not just smoke-free, but tobacco-free. The college's new tobacco policy approved last October is taking effect Tuesday.

Tobacco is banned in all buildings and on all land owned or leased by the college. The rules apply to all forms of tobacco, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipes and chewing tobacco.

People will be able to smoke in their vehicles if the doors and windows are closed. The policy does not apply to public streets and sidewalks in the downtown campus.

The policy is designed to make the campus a healthier place.
