Barrow meets with veterans

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A federal audit of the Veterans Administration could lead to sweeping changes in health care for military veterans. But how much and how soon will it change?

Local veterans met with Congressman John Barrow Tuesday.

Thomas Kollars was an Army doctor who's plagued by back trouble. He said he wrote a letter to the VA with ideas to improve the system.

"The VA representative wrote back and said we have enough ideas, we don't need yours," he said.

Congressman Barrow brought reps from the VA, state veterans services and others to help vets get through whatever red tape they face to get treatment. He agrees the system needs an overhaul.

"In the meantime, we can't ask people who're trapped in the system to wait until we get the system fixed. There are too many people entitled to care who're getting the run-around from bureaucracy bureaucracy," Barrow said.

He hopes the current audit identifies any patterns of neglect and can get veterans their medical attention. Kollars said the changes won't come a minute too soon.

"It is absolutely criminal that we've got men and women dying that served our country and people are sitting on their hands...or throwing their files in the garbage," he said.

Veterans here say - for all they did to protect their country, their country should now protect them.
