Hometown Heroes--Michael Bazemore and Bay Brown

Fate has a way of putting good people in the right place at the right time. For Michael Bazemore and William Bay Brown, March 3 started out as a routine day. They just happened to be working at a BellSouth equipment hut on Quaccao Road. Around 9:45am, they heard a loud noise.

"Bay and I looked at each other I said oh no," Bazemore told us. "We looked over to the right and saw a van on its top sliding down the road. It slid into the ditch and the lady was trapped."

Without hesitation, both men ran across the road to help. The van was upside down, engine running with smoke and fuel pouring out. Brown pulled his wire cutters from his tool belt and cut the woman free. They asked her to turn off the engine to prevent a fire or an explosion.

After getting her out of the van, they provided her aid and comfort until paramedics arrived. The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Residents of the community consider the ditch to be a very dangerous place because of its depth. On March 3, it turned out to be just that.

"You never anticipate being put into a situation like that," said Brown. "And you hope that you act accordingly and everything that you do is positive, and I feel good about what went on that morning."

For stepping forward in the face of danger to pull a woman from what could have been a very bad situation, Michael Bazemore and Bay Brown are this week's WOTC Hometown Heroes.
