Officials warn swimmers of rip currents

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

In Hilton Head Island officials are also issuing a strong warning to swimmers and boaters, telling them to expect a lot more rip currents as Arthur moves through the area.

They haven't had any rescues yet, but rip currents make it difficult for folks to swim in the water so they're asking everyone to proceed with caution, especially Wednesday and Thursday.

"I just noticed the wind picking up and the waves...because they're really big," tourist Nellie Paskowica said.

Officials said people should stay closer to the shore, staying in water below the waist.

They advise if you don't know how to swim, don't get in the water at all.

"All of our guards are area of it... we've got caution flags flying today," Operation Manager with Shore Beach Services said.

As far as Shore Beach Services go, they have about 80 life guards and there are about 65 already out Wednesday. They do not plan on calling in extra guards.

They don't expect this storm to impact the Lowcountry area much at all.

That is fantastic news for South Florida resident Kristen Mager. She and her family are at Hilton Head on vacation and the last thing they want to be in the middle of is a tropical storm.

"Apparently everyone at home is having horrible weather and we are just totally loving that we're here and that we're not having any of that," she said.
